A childhood dream come true 

Sparky is a dream come true for Ben and Rebekah. As a child, Ben always wanted a black and white Border Collie called “Spark Plug” — Sparky for short (yes, you read that right)! But it wasn’t until many years later that he finally entered their lives.

Border Collies are known for their intelligence and Sparky is no exception. He wakes Ben up at 5.30am for his morning walk, come rain, hail, or shine, and loves a good cruise in the car.  

According to his parents, Sparky is a big sook who loves a good scratch behind his ears and on his rump. He’s even known for reversing into his parents’ hands — a not-so-subtle hint for a bottom scratch! 

Spark Plug’s anxiety and sensitive stomach  

When he was younger, Spark Plug was diagnosed with anxiety and a sensitive stomach, often requiring multiple trips to the vet. He was prescribed medication for his anxiety, and the vet suggested trying new foods to find one that worked for his tummy. 

“We changed his food a number of times to try and calm his stomach – dry and wet food from every price range. Some would work for a month or so, and then he would be back to a bad tummy which would add to his anxiety.”

Whenever Sparky had an upset stomach, his parents would cook meals of chicken, carrots, and rice until it settled down. A homemade diet seemed to be the only thing that worked so Rebekah and Ben continued to make Spark Plug’s food for 2 years. Although they were happy to do it, it was another chore to add to their day, which became a scramble if they were going out or delayed at work.
